Sonipat, also spelled as Sonepat, is an ancient town and a municipal council in the Sonipat district in the Indian state of Haryana. Sonepat comes under the National Capital Region and is around 20 kilometers from Delhi (Sindhu Border). The Yamuna River runs along the eastern boundary of the district. Sonipat comprises of 3 sub-divisions namely Sonipat, Ganaur and Gohana.

It’s believed that Sonipat was founded as Swarnaprastha by the five Pandava brothers during the times of Mahabharata. Mythologically, it is one of the five towns demanded by Yudhisthira from Duryodhana as the price of peace.
