With its unique perfection and charming luster, pearls add more to a woman’s beauty and grace. Women are crazy towards pearls as it can give them an elegance, success and social status.

People judge pearl according to its size, shape, color and shining. The most expensive pearl will have a perfectly round shape, natural color, good luster and improved size. Pearls don’t have a standard classification like diamonds. They are priced based on their luster, size, shape, and color only. However, natural pearls are more expensive than cultured ones, because of its natural formation.

Because of its organic origin pearls are called “Queen of Jewels”. Pearls are created when a foreign body like a grain, sand or a parasite enters into a pearl oyster. Oyster react to this by coating a thin layer of pearly secretion called ‘nacre’ over the foreign particle, which as time passes will give it a unique appearance and ardent beauty. When natural pearls are formed in this way, artificial ones are formed when someone intentionally stimulates the development of pearl by inserting a particle into the oyster. Main difference between the natural pearl and cultured pearl is that natural pearl comes out of the shell in a natural way, while we have to exert some pressure to take out the artificial pearl. However, it is very difficult for a common man to distinguish a natural pearl from a quality cultured pearl.

While pearl is considered as the birth stone of people who born in June, couples exchange jewelries made of pearl for their third and thirtieth wedding anniversaries. For any occasion a jewelry set made of pearl will add more color to that function.

Pearls from the Australian south sea are considered as the most rare and finely cultured one in the world. As their natural beauty will never fade they do not require bleaching, tinting, dying or skinning. These highly priced pearls are round or drop shaped and its size ranges from 8 millimeter to 18 millimeter.

Two most commonly cultured pearls in the south sea are white pearls and black pearls. While white pearls are cultured in Australia, the Philippines and Indonesia, the black pearls are found in Cook Islands and the Gambier Islands in France.

Classic pearls among the pearl group are Akoya Pearls and we can see them in colors ranging from pinkish white, creamy shades and silvery blue. When Akoya Pearls are mostly seen in southwest of Japan and China, seedless keshi pearls are cultured in Akoya and South Sea. Keshi pearls are used mostly for making necklaces with colors ranging from silvery white to silvery grey.

By forming in delicate shapes like round and oval Chinese freshwater pearls are grown in good varieties in China, with colors ranging from white to orange and rosy violet. Another type of pearl is Kasumiga Pearls, and we can find these pearls in the northeast part of Tokyo. These pearls are rose in color and are a crossbreed between and Chinese freshwater mussels.

One program in TLC – ‘Ho my gold’ compared by a famous fashion celebrity Lissa Ray gives us lot of information about jewelries made with different metals. In that program Lissa ray visits jewelries that showcases ornaments related to gold, silver, pearl diamond etc. In two or three episodes of that program she visited pearl jewelries and showed different authentic pearl ornaments like rings, bangles and necklaces. She also took us into their work yard where we have the opportunity to see different process through which pearls are treated and later carved into an exclusive jewelry. Some channels also air programs related to pearl farming and the adventures they faced during that expedition.
