Do you want to re-laminate an old countertop that is already laminated? If yes, then it is better to go right over the old laminate. This is because removing the old laminate is a boring and painstaking chore. So don’t do this unless it becomes necessary. One should remove the old laminate only if it’s so badly damaged that you can’t put a new layer on it without affecting the look of the new surface. You need to be very patient because the removal process is a time consuming process and it involves dissolving the glue chemically. Let’s understand the process in detail.

Before we start the process of laminate removal, we should prepare ourselves for the process. Open all the windows to allow proper ventilation in the room. Wear goggles and rubber gloves for protection. To save time in after-cleaning process, spread newspapers on the floor around the counter. Don’t forget to fill the spray bottle with lacquer thinner.

Use a putty knife under the laminate from an edge and spray lacquer thinner in the opening. Wait for a minute and carry on removing the old laminate slowly using putty knife. Always remember that each time the laminate comes up further, push a wood shim and re-spray into the opening to make it raised. Do not try to rip or break the laminate as it will make the process even more difficult. After removing the entire sheet, clean the surface thoroughly using power palm sander.

Now it’s time to replace laminate sheets. Put the laminate sheets down on newspaper and spread contact cement on the back of the sheets. Spread the cement evenly and allow it to dry. Now hold piece of laminate for the vertical front edge against the surface where you want to use it, with the laminate impending on all sides. After determining the right position, press it into the place. Next thing to do is to run your laminate roller over the surface. Cut down the extra laminate on the edges and corners. Lay the dowel rods across the countertop, with about one rod per foot of the length.

Now after understanding the process you would be in a better position and can easily remove & replace laminate sheets. The only thing you need take care of is to buy wood laminate from a reliable supplier. Make a search online and look at different laminate options including plastic laminate and wood laminates. Choose the one that perfectly matches with the other elements of your home décor.
