The secrets of Diamond
Introduction:
Diamond, now no more a mystery but it still attracts everyone’s attention as it is an object of desire, sign of eternal love and a pride for those who own one. Diamond, a naturally formed mineral, is a roughly shaped stone formed in high temperature by chains of carbon atoms and found deep up to 190 Km in the earth’s mantle. It is believed that diamonds were first discovered in the country called India near the banks of river around 6000 thousand years ago. Merchants are widely responsible for the bringing the precious stones to the far lands of china to the European regions. The word diamond originated from Greek term called “adamas” which means invincible based on its characteristic of being unbreakable.
Drilling for Diamond:
As mentioned earlier, diamond can be found deep beneath the earth surface and requires sophisticated tools that have their surfaces made up of diamond dust and which has the capability to drill and to cut the diamonds or any hard substance known to man. Diamonds are mined either from kimberlite (rock in which diamond is formed) pipes below the surface of the earth or found from alluvial deposit. Alluvial deposit is found quite near to the earth’s surface which had occurred during the volcanic action that carried the kimberlite rocks with it. There are five different procedures that are carried out in order to obtain a diamond. First stage is mining, second stage is crushing, third stage is separating, fourth stage is greasing and the fifth stage is cutting.
Diamond Cutting:
Like diamonds, gems are also precious stones. Gem cutting or diamond cutting is also called as lapidary. Although the gem cutting technique is same for diamond or any other stone, it becomes quite a task for the gem cutter to cut a diamond because of its hard properties. There are particular tools (thin saw of copper or alloy of steel) that contain diamond dust along its edges that acts as an abrasive which therefore permits the stone to be itched over. Once the stone is mined from the earth and all the impurities are removed by following the methods mentioned above, the diamond drill procedure begins. The first step is sawing, the second one is grinding, the third one is sanding and the forth step is polishing.
Conclusion:
Once the diamond undergoes all these steps, you get a shiny, transparent and attractive stone called diamond.
