The Quaintness of Ceramic Door Furniture
My cousin is one of those nosy people who like to visit other people’s homes and get a good look at their things so that she can then go home and copy the same ideas. This would not be so bad if she at least praised the thing that she was planning on duplicating, but no, she has never complimented anything and the day she actually voices a positive opinion about something, will be worth remembering. Last month she bought the same fridge freezer that my parents have in their kitchen and this week she has just had some ceramic door furniture fitted onto her doors, including ceramic door knobs, keyhole covers and ceramic knobs on her dresser.
The reason I know this is not because I have been to the house to see what she has recently added, nor has she called and told me, but because my parents came to see me and mentioned it. You see, my parents have a lovely home upon which they have spent many years and a lot of time, effort and money. They have collected pieces of furniture and decorative items over the years so that the house looks cared for and well put together with everything looking as though it has always belonged in that certain place. Some of the items in their home have been gathered during vacations and after rifling through antique stores and craft markets, so that a lot of the things are unique to their house and hard to replicate.
Some things are of course easy to copy and it is not hard to find similar things these days, especially if you use the internet and order online. My parents do not believe that they have the monopoly on nice things but they do feel that when they buy something nice and then see it a week later at my cousin’s house, they are entitled to comment, something which upsets both parties. The thing with my cousin is that she does not realise that all houses have different characteristics and charm and that what looks good in one home, may not suit another house’s dimensions or style.
The latest objects of dissension are the ceramic door knobs I mentioned earlier, since my parents bought a lovely collection of ceramic door furniture from an antiques fair a while ago and had it fitted throughout the house a couple of weeks ago. It looks charming and rustic while adding a quaint look to the doors in the house.
A few days later, they were surprised to see variations of the ceramic knobs throughout my cousin’s house at which point they became upset as she had ridiculed their ceramic door furniture when she had visited. Although the patterns and designs varied, she had similar lever handles, fingerplates, and Victorian knobs with matching keyhole covers, but because they were reproductions, the overall look just did not match the other things in the house and did not add the same quaint finishing touches.
