The Eames Lounge Chair: the Product of Iconic Minds

First released in 1956, the Eames Lounge Chair is a modern design classic. Its iconic design incorporates both style and comfort. Its "baseball mitt" appearance and backward tilt hold the sitter in a padded grip. Combined with the accompanying ottoman, it offers almost unparalleled comfort.

The designers of the Eames Lounge Chair, Ray and Charles Eames, are icons within the world of modern design. Through their work in both architecture and furniture, they pioneered the use of new materials and techniques, including moulded plywood, fibreglass, plastic resin and mesh.

Charles Eames was a pioneer from his earliest days. Supposedly kicked off an architecture course at Washington University because his ideas were "too modern," he was one of the first to show off the possibilities of the "wood moulding" process. Originally developed by the Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto, wood moulding allowed a sheet of thin veneer to be curved into new and interesting shapes. For the first time, a wooden seat could be a comfortable one, which fitted the body rather than pressing against it. Eames’s continued interest in the process is reflected in the curved wooden aesthetics of the Eames Lounge Chair – itself constructed from thin layers of Brazilian rosewood.

The word "iconic" is bandied about a lot these days, used for everything from the Mona Lisa to the latest winner of The X Factor. In the case of the Eames Lounge Chair, it is truly deserved. Over fifty years it has appeared in films and television series as deserve as Mad Men, Life's Too Short, Friends, Frasier, House, Family Guy, The Big Lebowksi and Moonraker. They are a short hand for modern – or in more recent years, retro – design and comfort. They are to be seen and to be used.

Though most of the early catalogue listings credited only "Charles Eames", his second wife Ray played an important part in the development in many of his works during their 38 year marriage. She designed most of the fabrics used in their designs and the “Time-Life” Stools – solid mahogany stools, designed for use in the offices of New York’s Time-Life Building – were almost exclusively her work.

Above all, the designs of Charles and Ray Eames are known for their combination of style, function, comfort and innovation. The Eames Lounge Chair – not forgetting the ottoman – remain a design icon to this day and add that little dash of charm to any room. Over fifty years on from their first unveiling, age has only improved them. They retain their iconic look, but have gained a certain retro chic at the same time. Old and new. Stylish and comfortable. The Eames Lounge Chair is the very end in armchair design. And they’re damn comfortable, too.
