Protecting Paint from Mold
Residential painting unfortunately gets put through the ringer somewhat. This is because of the amount of things that can damage it and the fact that it is subjected to every aspect of our every daily living. This means things like paint getting chipped off by things going past or knocking into it, it means things like dogs pawing at it, and it means things like moisture from the air etc settling on the walls.
One of the very worst things that can commonly cause problems for paint on the walls is mold. Mold is caused by dampness which attracts the microscopic mold spores to the surfaces and it has many problems for your health. However one of the big things people tend to forget is that it is also a very big contributor to damage to your property, and particularly to your interior painting. If you have mold settling on your interior painting, then after not too long you will start to notice the paint flaking off and becoming discoloured and you will likely need to get new residential painting.
However it is not sufficient to just get more residential painting without looking into what is actually causing your house painting to become moldy. It's highly important to get to the route cause of the problem, as this way you will be able to track down what it is that is causing the damage so that it doesn't just affect your new paint as well.
First of all then you must look at where the mold is settling on your property. Most likely it will be on the external walls of your property (on the inside side of them however) and possible high up at the top. This is because these walls are the coldest and this causes moisture to condense on them. If this is the problem then you need to ensure you keep your property warm enough to prevent this from happening by keeping your heating on during the colder months. Note that once your walls get to this temperature it's going to be very hard to warm them up again costing you more on energy in the long run but also more of course on residential painting.
If the water is up at the top of your rooms on the ceiling for instance then this will be caused most likely by water settling up the top. It's a good idea here to make sure that your gutters are working properly, and if you have a flat roof to make sure that the water is draining off correctly.
Finally another common place where mold can affect your interior painting is behind radiators and curtains etc. The reason for this is that these areas cause 'air pockets' where cool air can't circulate which gives your mold a nice warm and wet place to grow. Of course interior painting isn't so important back here, but it will take away from the sheen of your property. To avoid the problem try to create as much space behind furniture as possible, and make sure to open windows and doors to get air circulating.
