Processing of Granite Slabs for that Exquisite Look
Not many are aware of the original form and processing of granite slabs which form a base as granite countertop in most kitchens. A mixture of rocks, solids and magma, buried in innermost layer of earth’s surface, forms granite. The igneous rock is found in innermost crust and is available for a select few owing to its limited availability and cost of material. However, one time investment can be done as granite slabs last long and look extremely desirable.
Depending upon the minerals locked in rocks, color of the granite ranges from grey to black and pink to maroon. The richness of minerals cast a rich look to the natural stone. However, granite slabs of different size and thickness are processed to turn them into desirable form. Normally, Jet piercing method is used in granite extraction from the earth. Henceforth, it is processed to make it fit for installation.
Granite rock is sawed into slabs of desired thickness ranging from 6” to 12”. for its effective installation. Diamond rotary saws are used to give them the right thickness. Rotary saws are attached with sharp blades and it works with water as a coolant. Computer programmed rotary saws perform endlessly as per instructions from the computer and cut endless pieces of granite as per pre-set dimensions including block size and thickness.
The next step is designing and finishing cuts done through computer controlled computer wire. Diamond segment in steel wire cut hard rock granite in preferred shape and size.
Polishing mills specifically installed to give much desired glossy finish to the granite slabs. Operators direct heavy wheels along with water flow on rough granite slabs to turn these into smooth and shiny surface.
Finally a heavy buffing wheel is guided on the whole slab for that mirror-finish with full radiance.
Mirror finished glossy-looking granite slabs can’t be used as granite countertops until these are sealed with proper sealant. Sealant is applied evenly to protect and maintain exotic finish and last for lifetime. Granite slabs are tumbled to smooth sharp edges to have clean, polished, and bright finish. A horizontal barrel filled with lubricant is rotated on the slab. Tumbling results in round-edged stones and an aged look so much visible on granite countertops. The rustic and worn looks cast uniqueness. Beauty of stones is doubled-up and it is ready to cast richness in interior and exterior furnishing. Tumbled granites are meant to be installed in exteriors and in bathrooms as it remains non-slippery even with regular water flow on these.
To protect these stones from staining, wearing and tearing users should seal these with resin type sealer at regular intervals and maintain its longevity. Granite floors should be cleaned with especially made pH balanced cleaners and this should be done only once in a while as cleaner takes away the sheen from the stone making it look dull and faded.
Granite is one of the costliest natural stones used in interior and exterior furnishing. It should be cared for to maintain its life and make it look fresh and sparkling at all times.
