From algae growth to Algae Control

Algae … the well known green in the clean clear waters … the most simplest of all green living organisms that carry out photosynthesis … the essential and not so essential aquatic plants, that if allowed to grow uncontrolled can lead to problems. This is how one can define “algae”. And “algae control” will refer to all the measures exercised in order to restrict the growth of algae to a suitable level. All living organisms serve one purpose or the other but all living organisms are also supposed to live in harmony with one another. Uncontrolled growth of one species will alter the food chains and food webs drastically and therefore the algae growth has to be monitored regularly. Algae find the pond water quite suitable for growth. And therefore, the pond maintenance becomes essential to see that the ecosystem surrounding the pond remains in perfect harmony with optimum algae growth.

Ponds are a host to a rich aquatic ecosystem which requires pond care to be carried out as naturally as possible; for while controlling algae growth - we do not want to affect other organisms. Thus, more than medicines and chemicals, it is the light and nutrients that can give the effective results. The algae thrive in nutrient rich and light rich ponds. So, the basic idea is to cut the availability of the two. Cutting on the light availability is not as simple as it sounds because having lots of shady trees around the ponds will lead to pond cleaning to be carried out more often. But it definitely reduces the algae growth. So, we will have to have an optimum balance between the two. The next thing is to reduce the input of nutrients. But there is no single source of nutrient input, so, this requires proper blend of actions in the related areas.

Preventing the flowing of nutrients into the ponds is one step to begin with. Growing nutrient consuming aquatic plants could be another. Over-feeding and over-stocking of ponds will have to be strictly controlled. The pond cleaning services have to ensure that do not leave behind the nutrients that favor the growth of algae in guise of cleaning ponds as it will do more harm than good. Thus, a proper balance of nutrients and light can prevent the algae growth. But it does not stop the algae growth altogether. And as we discussed earlier, some algae is good too but just how much will have to be decided strategically. There should be no imbalance in the eco-system by unrestricted growth just as there should be no imbalance because of restricted growth. This ensures a healthy and sustainable pond environment.

The algae growth is to be monitored regularly since the ecosystem is dynamic and ever-changing. And the factors affecting their growth will have to be adjusted accordingly. This also calls for use of some chemical controllers for algae. They work with natural methods in order to provide better and efficient algae control in the chosen pond or other region. Thus, algae control can be exercised dynamically too and this will allow us to breathe in happy and healthy surroundings.
