Fix Roof Ventilation Before Black Mold Takes Over
Roof ventilation is a very important element of roofing. Effective roof ventilation increases the life of the roofing material in the roof. To properly ventilate a roof cavity you require intake vents to allow the fresh air into the roof space. The main purpose of effective roof ventilation is to balance the temperature inside and outside the roof space 24X7.
If you are living in a highly humid area, you should always look out for potential mold problems. Basically the outdoor humidity effect indoor humidity levels and creates a perfect environment for toxic mold growth. Molds and mildew are the most serious problem in your home. Mold is an indicator of excess moisture in your roof. It may cause roof leak, poor attic ventilation or moisture problems in all the areas of your home. Furthermore mold gives rise to several health hazards. Like respiratory problems, allergic reactions, skin, eye, and throat irritation, immune system diseases, and even cancer.
This is not the happiest story but we are sharing it because it points out why you need to fix roof problems before the water damage gets out of control. This has happened to many Virginia (VA) home owners because they were not aware of the dangers of excess moisture trapped inside a home.
This customer called us on the recommendation of a neighbor where we had fixed a roof leak. This customer had built one of the super energy-efficient homes that were the rave for a while until people living in them began to experience severe health problems. The lack of air exchange meant the family was breathing stale air, depleted of oxygen and full of mildew and mold spores.
The neighbor suggested we be called in to check out the attic, because there was a strong musty odor in the house. When we walked into to home the smell hit us like a brick wall. Checking the attic, we discovered it was completely overtaken by mildew and black mold growing everywhere. What a mess.
Using an infrared scanner we learned that the black mold was growing inside every wall in the house. If we had been called sooner we could have installed an attic ventilation system to rid the house of excess moisture. As it was, the house had to be torn down and destroyed. Unfortunately, when black mold is given the chance to flourish it becomes deadly. You can’t remove your mould until you’ve fixed your moisture problem. The advice here is to fix roof ventilation problems as soon as you suspect something is wrong.
