Ofsted Lesson Observation Criteria and School Inspections
Ofsted lesson observation criteria form the backbone of Ofsted (short for the Office of Standards in Education), an independent and impartial group who inspect and regulate a number of services, from childminding and child day care to state and independent schools and teacher trainer providers.
Inspectors, assessing in adherence to the Ofsted lesson observation criteria observe lessons, talk to the pupils about their work and estimate their engagement in learning and their perception of the school. The purpose of the Ofsted lesson observation criteria and inspection is to provide an external evaluation and based upon the evidence diagnose areas where improvements could be made.
Adherence to the Ofsted lesson observation criteria promotes improvement in a number of key ways. The Ofsted lesson observation criteria clearly identify strengths and weaknesses, nurture a dialogue between the teachers and the inspectors, and promote effective learning and a rigour in the way a school evaluates its performance.
Ofsted lesson observation criteria require inspectors to report on the quality of education in a number of ways, covering the achievement of pupils, the behaviour and safety, quality of leadership and management and seeing that particular needs are met, including disabled students and those who require special education assistance.
In assessing the quality of teaching in a school, Ofsted lesson observation criteria allow an evaluation of the extent in which teachers’ expectations are sufficient, and how well their teaching enables pupils to develop skills in reading, writing, communication and mathematics.
The inspection grades pertaining to the Ofsted lesson observation criteria range from grade 4, the lowest grade, ‘inadequate’, to grade 1, ‘outstanding’. If the school is given a grade 4 rating in accordance with the Ofsted lesson observation criteria, special measures are then taken in an effort to systematically tackle the issues.
Ofsted undertake hundreds of inspections of regulatory visits and publish their findings. You can download a copy of the 2012 Ofsted lesson observation criteria online at CS Education Services.
