Making Your Home a Fireproof Place: How To?

By Nathan Brown T Subscribe to RSS | December 19th 2011 | Views:

It is carelessness that often produces fires in homes. The use of fire in households is inevitable; in cold places you need them to warm yourself, cook food and iron your cloths just to name a few. In fact the refrigerator you use to keep food safe from going stale to the laundry machine that you use to wash, all produce heat and if not properly maintained and periodically checked for insulation, are potentially fire bombs. The high temperatures that they produce can be enough to ignite some inflammable material that you have stored. If you live in the countryside and have a barn where you store hay for the cattle, it is again a potentially hazardous place where an electric short circuit can raze it down in no time. Since you cannot think in terms of eliminating its use, it makes sense to prevent fire with ADT Alarm System; after all that is the best we can possibly do to prevent something catastrophic from happening.

Fire if it has been initiated is difficult to extinguish, due to the risk involved and the sheer magnitude of the problem. For those around a fire, it is natural to run away from the scene rather than fight against. It usually takes a long time in small towns for fire fighters to arrive, and usually by that time most of the damages would have been done.

Managing a huge fire at home can be a little daunting even for the experienced, but prevention is something that all of us can do to keep ourselves safe. Some of the suggestion may appear too simple to give a second though about, but nevertheless follow them meticulously, you will even be happy that you had, when you manage to put out a fire that you had unwittingly sparked.

One of the reasons why kitchen fire happens is because it is left unattended. Although most kitchen equipments are designed to self extinguish, you cannot expect them to work as they are intended to. Small pieces of dish towels that are left near the stove are potential candidates for a fire. So the next time you are in the kitchen, be a little more attentive to the task that lies ahead of you. A TV in the kitchen or even a music system is potentially enough to cause distraction. So it is always best to avoid them in the kitchen.

Keep your chimney and furnace checked by a qualified technician at least once a year. If you use cooking gas check that the tubing are all maintained properly and accessories are replaced at regular intervals. Curtains, furniture and your clothing are all capable of causing fire, so maintain a safe distance from the stove, and try not to use lose cloths when you are cooking. A carbon monoxide detector (fire detector) is one of the best investments that you can make in your kitchen. They will help you prevent burns by detecting fire at its earliest stage and that should help you to take precautionary steps.

While the potential for fire in the kitchen is understandable, the possibility of fire in the bedroom is often difficult to perceive. It would appear that other than the air conditioner or a dehumidifier there is little that one need to be careful about. But strangely occupants forget that smoking is one of the major causes for fire in bedrooms. While it would be too much to expect people not to smoke inside their bedrooms, it would therefore help if they took enough care to put off the fire on the butt. So the next time you buy an ashtray for your home, let it be a large one, preferably one made from glass that is too heavy to trip over and is non inflammable.

Finally check every electrical installation in your home, at least once a year, by a qualified electrical engineer. He may even have suggestions to make your home safer than what it is now. A little effort on your part can go a long way in making your home a safer place to live.
