A Note on Gallstones and Its Treatment
Gallstones are solid masses of digestive compounds that develop in human gallbladder. This is one of the commonest disorders that affect a significant number of people. They are of two types in the likes of their composition i.e. ones made of cholesterol and the others made of bilirubin. They are common in overweight people, pregnant women and people who tend to lose weight rapidly.
Doctors have so far failed to present a clear idea about the reasons that causes gallstones, but overall it is believed that presence of excessive amount of bilirubin and cholesterol leads to such problems. Apart from this, incomplete emptying of the gallbladder cleanse is also considered to be responsible for such problems in some cases. Other than this, calorie intake, family history, inactive life style and liver infections also cause gallstones.
Gallstones can be with or without any symptoms. For the ones that are active, patients will feel certain problems such as pain in the upper abdomen, vomiting, nausea, shoulder aches and others. On the contrary, the silent stones are considered potentially dangerous as patients will never get to know about the problem. While in some cases, it might not require any surgeries or treatments, in some exceptional cases, silent stones can explode suddenly that can be hazardous to the patient and even cause deaths.
Gallstones treatment is generally done by removing the gallbladder from the human body. Earlier, open abdomen surgery used to be done but with medical advancement over the years, nowadays surgeries are done by laparoscopic cholecystecomy. The stones that get stuck within the bile duct can be removed without any surgery using a procedure called Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography. Herbal treatments are also proving to be more than useful in treating such problems.
