Important features of Rack Mount servers
The height of a single rack is uniformly fixed to measure 44.5 mm or 1.75 in. This rack is termed as one rack unit or abbreviated by the letter ‘U’. Industrial Rack Mount Servers are usually standardized with rack cabinet of forty-two units or 42U. Needless to say, Rack Mount Servers are designed to fit in these standard rack cabinets.
All the servers on the rack can be accessed with common devices such as monitor, keypad and mouse. This is done by making use of software or hardware such as a switch. Most rack mount servers can be mounted even upside down but care has to be taken to fit other equipment like DVD players which cannot operate in upside down position. Rack mount servers are manufactured mainly for use by industry and the military and include high end processors such as Intel Xeon Processors of 5500 or 5600 series.
Some Design Features of Rack Mount Servers:
• Rack mount servers slide on rails to fit in place. They can be locked at different places on these rails so that the hardware does not move when they are slided out for maintenance.
• Installation is made easy due to locking pins on the side of the server that fit into the slots on moveable rails.
• Usually there is a folding cable tray at the rear end of the server that can hold folded cables. The advantage of this arrangement is that the server can remain plugged in while being extended out of the rack during maintenance as the cables stored in the tray are unfolded. This simplifies the maintenance process. This arrangement also has its disadvantage as air circulation is impeded because of the cable and the tray.
• Rack mount servers usually have LED identifiers on the front and back to show which serves faulty. This is especially helpful if there many servers (sometimes more than 50) on the rack.
• The rails on which the server is mounted can have a handle to move the server on the rails so that cables need not be used to pull or push the server.
Innovations in design and performance are making Wall mount servers popular in industry,
