All geared up for the Presidential polls in India
Who will be the next Indian president? This question has already started heating up the battle for the Presidential polls in India. The election of new president coincides with end of the term of Pratibha Patil as the president of India. The tenure of Pratibha Patil as the President would end on july 24, 2012
The Presidential polls in India are expected to be held in July which is still two months away but the steam is already being felt.Vice PresidentHamid Ansari, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Former President APJ Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former speaker Somnath Chatterjee, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh and names of several other nominees have cropped up for the post of the President. Congress is all set to woo its coalition allies for the support with Mamata Banerjee’s Trianmool Congress being their main target. Of lately, Mamata has been seen opposing many of the intiatives taken by the Congress government which is not good for them. Political observers are of the opinion that the candidate who would make it to the Presidential polls in India would be a surprising one. In Congress, Pranab Mukherjee is probably the best candidate that they could nominate and he also deserves promotion after his long service to the nation. Many of the party memebers were taken by surprise when Sushma Swaraj refused to back Pranab Mukherjee and Hameed Ansari for the post of the president. She is of the opinion that Hameed Ansari lacks the necessary stature while Pranab Mukherjee being a Congressman could not be supported. The decision regarding who will be invited to form the government in 2014 rests with the president which will be elected in July 2012. Also, Mamata Banerjee feels that Hameed Ansari has a strong support from the Communists as the Left party had supported him as vice-president during UPA-1. Gopal Krishna Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi is another likely candidate to become a President. A lot of hurdles are cleared for him as he is associated with Mahatma Gandhi and also because of his great relationship with J Jayalalitha, CMs Naveen Patnaik and Nitish Kumar.
For the smooth working of the nation, presidential elections of the country are very important. The President is reponsible for the all the top appointments of the nation. The legislative assemblies of the state and the elected members of the Parliament possess the right to vote for the President.
