Tips for Nurturing a Healthy Teacher Student Relationship
Once there was a pencil maker in a village. The pencil maker used to make pencils of different colors. One day he decided to transmit some life building thoughts to the pencils that he had made. So the pencil maker propped the pencils aside, just before putting them into the box. “There are five things you need to know”, he told the pencils “before I send you out into the world”.
Always remember them, and and you will become the best pencils you could ever be”: One- You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in someone’s hand; Two- You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you will need it to become a better pencil; Three- you will be not able to correct any mistake you might make so whatever you write, write carefully; Four- The most important part of you will always be what’s inside; And Five- On every surface upon which you are used, you must leave your mark. No matter what the condition, you must continue to write.
All the pencils understood the sayings and promised to remember these throughout their lives, and at last went into the box with purpose in their hearts. A teacher is like the pencil maker who teaches the students about the life, the world and how to survive with pride. A healthy teacher student relation can be beneficial for both of them. It helps the teachers to communicate well with the students and in turn, the students also get a scope to express their problems. This two way communication is vital to the academic development of a child.
There are some tips that teachers can follow to nurture a healthy teacher-student relation. These are briefly discussed below:-
• Gain the Confidence- To make your students listen to you, you first need to gain their confidence. The teacher should be an example of strong personality to the students whom they can trust and can see as a solver of their problems.
• Listen to the Students- It is true that to make people listen to you, you first listen to them. In a classroom, the teachers must listen to their students’ problem and quarries minutely and should provide solution to them.
• Praise the Efforts- If you students do anything worth praising, always praise them positively. But remember to maintain an standard of equality while dealing with all the students.
• Show Respect and Value- Always value the emotions of the students. Never use words that may hurt them and destroy the beauty of the relation.
• Reach Students’ Level- Being teachers, we should always remember to consider the level of understanding of the students’ first. The lectures should be easy to understand so that every student of the classroom can easily absorb it.
• Doesn’t Enforce the Students- Never try to enforce your wishes on the students. This may develop in them a feeling of disrespect and also can act as a hurdle in smooth teacher-student relation.
High quality academic instruction refers to instruction that is appropriate to students’ educational level, creates opportunity for thinking and analysis, uses feedback effectively to guide students’ thinking, and extends students’ prior knowledge. So always try to create an environment where these things can be nurtured.
