Small Things Bring a Smile to a Child’s Face

Priyanka was attending her geography class but she was unable to concentrate because she was waiting for the class to get over. Although the lesson was interesting Priyanka was feeling restless as her mind was thinking something else. She was thinking of the ice candy man who had come sometime ago and the day’s quota would finish soon. The candy man used to visit the school on every Tuesday and Thursday to sell his delicious candy. Children would really become happy because of the eagerness of getting the candy but it becomes a headache for the teacher to hold the interest of the student on those two days.

The ice candy man used to come every week but that day was special for Priyanka as she had got a two rupee coin from her mother to buy one ice candy. Priyanka was very intelligent in her class and she was very serious about her studies. She had a single parent as her father died due to a snake bite when she was three years old. Since then her used to take care of her. Her mother had many bad phases but she never revealed this infront of her daughter, Priyanka.

On that particular day Priyanka was getting ready for school, her mother came to her and gave her a little paper bag with a two rupee coin. It was October and it was the time to celebrate festival Dusshera. So her mother told Priyanka after giving the two rupee coin that this is her puja gift. Priyanka’s mother knew that the ice candies were very popular in her entire school. Her mother really made Priyanka feel special and care for. The spirit of Durga Puja prevailed all around the village with small deities of the goddess being carried in rickshaws and making the sound of dhaak being played by people accompanying the deity. Priyanka always concentrated on her studies but that day she couldn’t stop herself from looking outside especially at the clerk whose duty was to ring the school gong at the end of the day.

She could feel the excitement of holding the candy in her hand and of it gradually melting in her mouth. After her father’s death, affording a candy had become difficult; therefore this day was special for her. She was trying hard to concentrate but the bell rang suddenly, everyone stood up and went out after wishing the teacher. The ice candy man had already begun digging away into his icebox. Soon, a huge crowd surged toward him. It was the last day of school before the puja break, thus the crowd was bigger than usual.

Priyanka was in no hurry. She took her time and enjoyed every moment of the wait. Soon, the crowd had lessened considerably. Priyanka took out her carefully preserved two-rupee coin and asked for a lemon candy. The thin paper cover on the candy was soaked with the juice of the bar. She removed the cover effortlessly and the icy air that she had imagined not only felt nice but also smelt good. The first bite was like a dream come true. Priyanka did not want to think of anything at that point of time, but could not help recollecting the radiant face of her mother.
