A new runway was built in 1956 running parallel with 07L/25R and is still in use. Its length was later increased to 3,200m to handle big aircrafts. Later, the government decided to construct a new airport using the prevalent runways. Construction began in 1957 with a new terminal as a step towards preparation for 1958 World Fair. Inaugurated in 1958, the new airport welcomed delegates coming to participate in the World Fair. Cheap flights to Brussels further augmented the number of visitors coming to this destination.
Later on, as need was realized, new hangers were added to the airport. In 1976, a novel cargo terminal was constructed. 1994 saw the construction of a brand new terminal.
According to a survey conducted, the Brussels airport served 17.8 million passengers in 2007. It was about 7% increase over 2006. 780, 000 tons was the volume of cargo amounted in the same year that was about 8.9% increase over 2006. A further increase of 3.7% was reported when the airport served 18.5 million passengers over the preceding year.
