Wine lovers say that, wine tastes better when it's older. This may hold true in case of most of the wines but not for all of the wines. However for this to be true, one needs proper wine storage solutions. Proper storage is the best way to protect your quality wines so that they last for a long time. Wine storage provides the perfect temperatures and maximum storage space so that you can find the wines you want easily and quickly. Still, very few people understand the actual science behind aging wine, which may explain why so many people neglect or rather underestimate the importance of proper wine storage solutions.

Storage or aging wine is both a science and an art. It is a science and its chemistry that is the driving force behind the wine aging process. The reactions involved are well understood, predictable and clearly illustrate why proper wine storage solutions are so important. It's just as tough to predict results among different vintages of the same brand and sometimes even the experienced enologists with proper wine storage facilities are not always successful in storing or aging wine. There are no guarantees when it comes to aging wine. We have all been pleasantly surprised by wine that should never have improved with age (but did), and vice versa.

There are some basic requirements for wine storage. These requirements are applicable for both long term storage wines and even "ready-to-drink" wines. Even the ready consumption wines can be safely stored for up to 8-12 months without any loss of quality as long as it is kept in an area with the following minimum storage conditions:

- Away from direct sunlight

- Temperatures between of 4ºC and 18ºC (40ºF and 65ºF)

- Temperature does not fluctuate more than 2-3ºC (5ºF) once annually,

- Humidity levels are greater than 50%.

These are minimal requirements for all wine storage facilities. Most wines have a "best before" date that can be measured in terms of months and less when stored in conditions of undue stress. Even age worthy wines, wines that will improve with age, may degrade in less than a year if not maintained properly. However there is also a need to understand the critical elements for all wine storage solutions, especially for storing and aging premium and fine wines.
