A few years ago I used to work at a local advice centre in Manchester and it was based on the same structure and principles as the Citizen’s Advice Bureau. We would get people coming in from all walks of life seeking help and guidance with regards to a variety of matters, ranging from their rights as tenants to help with filling in forms to collect various benefits. The majority of clients were interested in housing benefit and income support advice but we had a few interesting cases such as the gentleman who came to us for help in putting in a claim for vibration white finger, something which I had not heard of before.

Since I was on the desk at the time, the case fell into my lap and it was up to me to try my best to help the man and put together a successful claim for vibration white finger, which would be accepted and allow him some compensation for the pain he was suffering from. My first task was to find out whatever information I could with regards to the nature of the illness and to assess if the client should put in the claim. We could only advise him but the final decision was his as to whether or not he wished to proceed in the event that the assessment showed that he did not have much of a chance.

I learnt that vibration white finger was the older name for the problem more commonly known as HAVS or Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome. Another name for the same thing is “dead finger”. This is a type of industrial injury caused by over exposure to vibrating hand held machinery such, as a hammer drill, operating between 5 – 150 Hz. The affected areas are blood vessels, nerves, joints and muscles in the hand, wrist or arm. Some of the symptoms are;

Tingling- there is a tingling sensation in the fingers, sometimes just in the tips and there is loss of feeling as well as whiteness to the finger.

Colour change- the finger can become white and then suddenly go to a bright shade of red and experience a throbbing discomfort.

Loss of manual dexterity- this is where the fingers or hand lose their ability to grasp objects and perform the simplest of tasks. The pain at this stage can be severe and can last for more than an hour at a time.

Many of these symptoms are made worse by the onset of cold weather and suffers of this type of injury are left feeling quite debilitated.

There are guidelines available about how much exposure is safe and vibration is measured with an accelerometer, recording acceleration, amplitude and duration, to asses trigger time, measured in hours per day. If you feel that you qualify to put in a claim for vibration white finger, seek advice, as my client was awarded considerable compensation since the claim he put in was both genuine, well deserved and properly thought out.
