Breast Cancer Facts for Awareness and Prevention

The body is made up of cells and it’s always producing new cells. There are times when cells grow fast and are out of control and form a tissue mass called a tumor. Breast cancer facts –if these tissues are made up of normal cells—they are not cancerous but if they are abnormal—the tumor is called malignant or cancerous. When these tissues are part of one’s breast, the growth is called breast cancer. If the tissues are growing fast, they invade the other tissues that are surrounding the breast or even other parts of the body, and this is called metastasis.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer that affects American women and the data says it afflicts 1 out of every 8 women in America. It’s the second leading cause of death in the US among women and the American Cancer Society found that 226,870 females will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012. 39,510 women will face death. Breast cancer is usually not related to genetics, only about 10% of women with cancer have a genetic predisposition. As women age, the chance for developing breast cancer grows.

The symptoms of the disease can be varied but one must have knowledge of them to identify a lump. The first symptoms are usually either a lump or a thickening in the breast or near the underarm that often remains during the menstrual circle or a small lump the size of a pea inside the breast. A change in the size of the breast or oozing of clear fluid or blood stained liquid from the nipples can also be a symptom of cancer in the breast. A woman’s skin color or tone can change and there can be flakes, scales or a feeling of inflammation around the nipples if the breast is affected by cancer.

The person will often feel some changes that are painful and if this occurs, one should go to a physician for a check up. These are a few of the symptoms and breast cancer facts that one should be aware of, and if they occur, visit your medical specialist. Some breast cancers start in the ducts and spread to other tissues and others occur in the lobules where milk is produced. Each type can develop into serious cancer later.
