Matryoshka or Babushka (nesting dolls)

These dolls have become the symbol of culture in Russia. For those not familiar with this type of artwork, they are wooden dolls that have been fabricated to fit inside one another. The design itself is very basic, but the popularity has come mostly because of the intricate work painted on each figure. Every set of dolls made have a theme and tell about the history, customs and culture of the past as well as today. Khokhloma

This form of work originates in an old village greater than 300 years ago. It is very exotic and colorful woodwork that was sold by many artists at annual fairs in the region of Nizhni-Novgorod.

This type of Russian folk art goes all the way back to the late 1700s. Artist using clay creates many beautiful figurines as well as clay whistles. Again, like the nesting dolls, the painting and designs on the clay representing many different themes, also make this an example of a popular style found in Russia.
