Black History Month –Pay Tribute to Famous African Americans
In United States and Canada, Black History Month is held every year to pay homage and tribute to notable and famous African Americans who have paved the way for our generation. It is held on the month of February. The main events take place on the second week of February. In the United Kingdom, Black History month is celebrated in October. School and colleges normally participate in several events that take place during this time.
Today in Black history celebration, several attractive events take place. Different regional communities participate in these events. With a strong sense of community, people get involved in the events to enjoy some fun, excitement, and happy moments. In the UK, this event was first celebrated in the year 1987. However, the event started much earlier within the United States. It started 61 years before around 1926.
Beginning of Black History
During the year of 1926, notable historian C.G. Woodson and his associates proposed a weeklong celebration ceremony on Black Americans. They proposed a name for this celebration ceremony: NEGRO HISTORY WEEK. Second week of February was chosen because it marked the birthday week for famous African Americans like Frederick Douglass. In their memory and honor, this week of February was picked. It was thought that the event may not become a success. However, it proved totally wrong. The event became a huge success. It was met with several positive reviews. A lot of educational institute participated in the week long celebration event. However, it is in the year of 1976 when this weeklong celebration stopped taking place. Rather, it became a month long celebration event and was given the name: black history month.
