Kumbh Mela is the largest congregation of pilgrims not only in India but in the world, during this mass Hindu pilgrimage, millions and millions of people gather at the banks of rivers Ganga and Godavari to take sacred bath in the water of Ganga to get rid of one’s sins. Without the determination of these millions of devotees who want to be free from their suffering and pain, the Kumbh mela would never have been what it is today.

This Magnificent event of Kumbh Mela is generally celebrated after every 3 years at Haridwar, the Ardh Kumbh Mela happened after a time period of six years at Haridwar and Allahabad and the biggest celebration is called Mahakumbh or Purna Kumbh Mela, which is celebrated every twelve years. Mahakumbh Mela held in four cities Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayag), Nashik and Ujjain, the timing of this big religious event completely depends on the movement of planets. According to Indian Government, around 65 millions of pilgrims and tourists came to Allahabad for Ardh Kumbhmela held in 2007. During the Purna Kumbhmela in 2001, around forty five million people participated in the event. During 1954 Kumbh Mela around 400 people were killed in a stampede and thousands were injured.

According to Hindu Mythology and ancient Vedas, demigods had lost their all the powers and strength by the curse of Durvasa Rishi. To regain their powers, demigods approached Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva; they directed them to Lord Vishnu who advised demigods to churn Ksheer Sagar for nectar (Amrit). But there arose a problem; demigods cannot do that alone so they had to make an agreement to Demons (Asurs) that both demigods and Demons would share the wealth equally. But when the nectar pot (Kumbha) appears, the Lord Vishnu flew away with the Kumbha to ensure that the Demons would not get the nectar but some drops of nectar comes down to the earth from Kumbha at four places: Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayag), Ujjain and Nashik.

The next Mahakumbh Mela is scheduled to happen earlier next year and around ninety million pilgrims and tourists are expected to take part in the event. The government has ordered the authorities to take all the necessary actions to make Kumbh Mela 2013 a grand success. The duration of the next year’s Mahakumbh mela will be fifty six days against the 45 days in 2001. All the industrial units will be closed during the mela period so that there will be no shortage of pure water for pilgrims in Ganga river. 2013 Kumbh Mela is expected to be the biggest ever one in the history of Mahakumbh.
