The Environment and Portable Shelters

More and more building and construction as an industry is moving in the direction of temporary, portable and lightweight buildings. We are seeing more and more prominent use of prefab buildings which are buildings that are constructed normally at a factory or site away from where they will be eventually put together and then transported in pieces. At the same time we are even seeing individual prefab walls and roofing being constructed off-site in order to be added to existing buildings.

On top of this we are then also seeing instant shelters and temporary shelter being used a lot too. These are buildings that can be immediately erected and then taken down to be transported. These portable garages require no construction work and a lot less time and effort but can provide warmth, privacy and security as well as protection from the weather as any other building would. These are perfect when used for events such as party tents, but are also used to create portable garages and greenhouses and even disaster relief tents.

All of this is largely in order to create buildings quickly and more easily, but one of the other most important benefits is how it affects the environment. Using an instant shelter rather than building a permanent structure has countless benefits to the environment and is very important as a way to reduce waste and to prevent global warming etc. Here we will look at how and why.

Normally to construct a garage, a greenhouse, or a venue for a party would require days, weeks or months' worth of work which would involve a large construction force complete with lots of materials and with lots of machinery. They would be forced to travel to and from the site several times a day and they would be required to use a lot of raw materials.

All of this would basically mean that they ended up using large amounts of fuel and large amounts of materials. They would use the fuel and energy of course during the transport, but then also during the construction of the materials being used and more and this use of fuel would result in carbon emissions which would be released into the atmosphere.

These carbon emissions then thicken the atmosphere with more CO2 rather than oxygen which has the very negative effect of 'trapping' in sunlight which gradually increases the temperature of our environment over time. As we know, the side effects of this are severe leading to the increased temperature of our oceans and even our icecaps. The former is causing acidity levels to rise leading to the destruction of the coral reefs and of the millions of species of sea life that use them as their habitat. Then the melting of the ice caps is causing huge climate change and rising sea levels which are decimating our shore lines. On top of all that, the very existence of permanent sites is what leads to abandoned buildings and ruined areas that can no longer support the local wildlife making the use of portable shelters absolutely crucial.
