Batteries are such commonplace items that we don’t even think for a second about them. But then, have you ever thought what you tend to do with a used battery? The chances are high that you just dump them in the garbage bin and let the garbage truck pick them up along with other domestic waste. This is where the problem lies because unknowingly you are contributing to environment pollution. Batteries are high on harmful chemicals like mercury, nickel cadmium and lead acid among others and all of them have the potential to contaminate the environment. This is why it is so important that you recycle batteries. You don’t need to do anything for battery recycling. Just call up people that can dispose them properly.

The various harmful chemicals that batteries contain pose serious health hazards. Most of the batteries contain metals like lead and mercury. When battery recycling is not done and they are just thrown away, these metals come out of the batteries and seep into the soil. Ultimately they reach the groundwater level and contaminate the drinking water. Imagine your kid drinking water that has been contaminated with lead and mercury. When you recycle batteries such instances don’t occur.

There are other dangers of battery recycling not being done. Kids often tend to play with used batteries and parents don’t even think about this. But if used batteries are thrown into fire while the kids are playing, they can explode and cause substantial damage. Wait, there is more to come. The wet acid batteries, for instance, are not sealed and there is a considerable chance of the acid inside leaking out to cause severe skin burns. And acid burns can scar someone’s skin for life. Although most batteries today are dry batteries, wet batteries are not totally out of use. Batteries, when kept in a moist location, can also leak acid. Hence, you must recycle batteries at any cost.

Battery recycling as a process is rather simple. The companies that recycle batteries collect all disposable batteries and work on them. They remove all the pollutants and the harmful substances and extract the metals that can then be used for making new batteries or for some other metal related manufacturing and production.

Information about battery recycling is openly available online and so is information on companies that recycle batteries. Find out how you can effectively dispose batteries and contribute to a greener environment that is safe for the present and the next generation.

The batteries that are manufactured today have much less mercury content than before. Some of the batteries today contain a tenth of the mercury content that was found in the earlier batteries. The batteries today are mostly zinc-air button and silver-oxide batteries and are less harmful. But still, battery recycling remains a challenge and must be addressed properly. If you have batteries to dispose don’t hesitate to call a company that can recycle batteries. You will not only be helping the environment but your family and neighborhood too.
